Wild Life Forest Preschool at Earth Native Wilderness School is Central Texas’s first true forest preschool. Set in the hardwood forests of Bastrop along beautiful Cedar Creek, our forest preschool offers children ages 3-5 the chance to take their first steps towards long-term nature connection. Position Summary

Earth Native Wilderness School is seeking an experienced, self-motivated, nature-competent, organized and adventurous applicant to instruct year-round at our forest preschool and other nature preschool programs.

Position Schedule

This is a year-round, full-time position. During the school year (September-May), you will be an Instructor at Wild Life Forest Preschool, located at the Earth Native Campus in Bastrop, TX, where you will spend all day outside working with preschoolers in the woods. Usual schedule will be Monday-Friday from 8am-3pm, working with preschoolers ages 3-5. During summers (June-August) you will instruct at our preschool-aged summer camps in Southeast Austin.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with a co-instructor and Preschool Director to design and implement cohesive exciting programs for youth ages 3-5
  • Provide high quality outdoor education instruction in various settings, such as open water creeks, outdoor play yard, and on hikes in the surrounding 25-acre forest
  • Provide weekly communication with parents and families regarding program curriculum, logistics, and individual student progress
  • Help maintain a safe and functional school learning environment in rugged outdoor conditions. Wild Life Forest Preschool is outside every day, rain or shine!
  • Contribute to the growth and maintenance of Wild Life Forest Preschool’s outdoor learning elements, such as primitive shelters, swings, balance elements, water-pump system, and more
  • Assist with outreach on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.) and at local events, such as learning festivals, community engagements, and marketing opportunities

REQUIRED Qualifications

  • At least two years experience teaching outdoor education programs or similar related experience in the outdoors
  • At least one-year experience teaching preschool-aged children (ages 3-5)
  • Highly enthusiastic, motivated, trustworthy, and self-directed
  • CPR and First Aid Certification required before starting work

REQUIRED Skills

  • Must have knowledge and skill in most of the following areas:
  • General Naturalist Studies
  • Basic Outdoor Skills
  • Basic Wildlife Track Identification
  • Basic Navigation and Mapping
  • Hazards of Central Texas
  • Basic Flora and Fauna Identification for Central Texas (or similar skills from another bio-region)
  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must be creative, responsible, organized, and self-directed in small teaching teams with little oversight

Preferred Skills/Training

  • Two or more years’ experience teaching preschool-aged children in the outdoors
  • Experience with nature connection mentoring such as Art of Mentoring, Coyote Mentoring, Kamana Naturalist Training Program, Forest Preschool Pedagogy, or similar place-based mentoring
  • Graduate of Wilderness Awareness School’s Anake Leadership program, RDNA Program, AWC Certification Program or similar environmental education program
  • Background in play-based pedagogy, informal learning, or European-based forest schools

Pay

Average of 32-40 hrs a week/Pay rate $14-18/hr DOE
